Thermal map of the RIVAS flight zone
Rivas is one of Costa Rica's most established free flight zones and is also internationally renowned for its paragliding activity. The valley has been the birthplace of many great pilots and instructors and is undoubtedly the cradle of cross-country paragliding in the country. Its thermal conditions and distance potential are its greatest assets; many pilots visit the area, mostly during the tropical summer season, which is the best time for cross-country flights.
These satellite images contain embedded flights and thermal updrafts of many pilots during different times of the year. The map shows the evolution of the thermal map, the convective potential of the area, and the tracks throughout the valley.
The map displays the Alps by default. Scroll left to locate the American continent and Costa Rica. In the adjustment layers at the top left, select SKYWAYS and THERMALS to view ascents and tracks.
