SUPAIR SKYMATE: AI-Based Paragliding Safety
French manufacturer SUPAIR will launch an innovative safety system for paragliders in the spring of 2025, featuring an AI-assisted design for both the harness and the paraglider. This AI design is inspired by the systems currently used by MotoGP riders as part of their safety gear to prevent serious injury in the event of a potential crash. The airbags deploy when there are sudden changes in the pilot’s speed or position. The software is capable of distinguishing between a minor incident and a ”potential” accident, so it does not deploy arbitrarily. By installing motion sensors distributed throughout the paraglider and harness, this futuristic system features an accelerometer, a gyroscope, and a GPS to analyze the incident. For example, if the AI detects that the paraglider has entered an autorotation and the pilot is unable to recover, it automatically deploys the reserve parachute—there are two, one manual and one automatic. If the AI determines that the pilot is too low or falling at an uncontrolled high speed, it deploys the emergency parachute and activates the pilot’s airbags—one for the lower back and one for the neck—to protect the neck….
The system activates automatically as soon as the pilot fastens the harness buckle. This action activates all the sensors; there’s no need to press a single button. In flight, it can detect twists, spins, and collapses… The AI responds accordingly by monitoring the pilot’s movements and those of the wing. The system is complemented by an LED display integrated into the harness, which includes GPS data, a 3D topographic map of the entire world, a vario, barometric alarms, 4G/5G and Wi-Fi connectivity, and an automatic emergency alert system that notifies rescue services—even if the pilot is unconscious.
